How to cancel or pause a Google Play subscription on Android

Short answer

Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, tap Payments & subscriptions and then Subscriptions. Tap the subscription and tap Cancel subscription. You can use it until the end of the time you have paid for. Uninstalling the app does not cancel it.

Subscriptions bought through Google Play are managed in the Play Store, whichever app they belong to. Some can also be paused for a while, which stops the payments without losing your account.

Menu names are from the Google Play Store app on a recent Android version.

Step by step

  1. Open the Play Store and tap your profile picture

    It is at the top right. Check that the Google Account shown is the one that pays for the subscription.

  2. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions

    The list shows active, paused and cancelled subscriptions.

  3. Tap the subscription and Cancel subscription

    Follow the instructions and give a reason if asked. The subscription stays usable until the end of the paid period, and no further payment is taken.

  4. To pause instead

    Tap Manage and then Pause payments. Choose for how long. Depending on the app, this can be from one week to three months. Tap Confirm. Not every app offers a pause.

  5. To restart a paused subscription

    Open the subscription and tap Resume.

  6. To change how you pay

    Open the subscription, tap Manage and then Update, and choose another payment method.

Good to know

If the subscription is not in the list, it was bought with another Google Account or directly from the company, for example on its website. Look for the receipt in your email to find out.
