Can't add a card to Apple Wallet? 7 things to check

2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Ask your bank whether the card supports Apple Pay, update iOS, and make sure the iPhone has a passcode with Face ID or Touch ID and that your Apple Account uses two-factor authentication. For messages such as Could Not Add Card, Invalid Card or Card Device Limit, only the bank can help.

Adding a card to Wallet fails for two kinds of reasons. Either the iPhone does not meet a requirement, which you can fix yourself, or the bank refuses the card, which only the bank can change.

Step by step

  1. Ask whether the card supports Apple Pay

Not every bank takes part, and not every card from a bank that does. Prepaid, business and some debit cards are often excluded. The bank's website or hotline can tell you.

  2. Check the country or region

Apple Pay is offered in certain countries and regions only. The iPhone's region setting must be one of them.

  3. Update iOS

Install the latest version: how to update an iPhone.

  4. Set a passcode and Face ID or Touch ID

Wallet does not accept payment cards on an iPhone without a passcode. See how to set up Face ID on an iPhone.

  5. Turn on two-factor authentication

Your Apple Account must use two-factor authentication. See how to turn on two-factor authentication for your Apple Account.

  6. Check for an outage

Apple's System Status page shows whether Apple Pay and Wallet are running. A poor internet connection also makes the set-up fail, so try again on Wi-Fi.

  7. Call the bank for error messages

If you see Could Not Add Card, Invalid Card or Card Device Limit, contact your bank or card issuer. The decision is made there, and Apple cannot override it. Also ask the bank if the confirmation code by text or app never arrives.

Good to know

Check that your Apple Account is not locked or disabled. If you cannot sign in to it elsewhere either, fix that first.

Card Device Limit usually means the card is already on as many devices as the bank allows. Remove it from an old phone or watch, or ask the bank to do so.

The normal set-up is described in how to set up Apple Pay on an iPhone.

In short: Card supports Apple Pay, supported region, latest iOS, passcode and Face ID, two-factor authentication, no outage, otherwise the bank.
