Public transport in Germany: tickets, zones and how to avoid a fine
2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 2 October 2026
Buy a ticket before you board and, where your city requires it, stamp it in the validating machine on the platform or in the vehicle. Single, day, weekly and monthly tickets are priced by zones. Riding without a valid ticket usually costs 60 euros. The Deutschlandticket covers all local transport for 63 euros a month.
Local transport in Germany runs on trust. There are no gates, and inspectors in plain clothes check at random. That makes it easy to board without a valid ticket by mistake, and the fine is the same whether you meant it or not.
Rules, amounts and deadlines change. Check the official source named at the end before you act, and ask the office in your city, because procedures differ from town to town.
Step by step
Know the vehicles
Cities have buses, trams, underground trains (U-Bahn) and suburban trains (S-Bahn). Regional trains (RB, RE) connect towns. All of these belong to the local transport network, and one ticket covers a journey with changes.
Work out the zones
Fares depend on how many zones (Tarifzonen) you cross. The network map at the stop or in the app shows them. For a single trip, the machine or app works it out when you enter start and destination.
Choose the ticket
A single ticket (Einzelfahrschein) is valid for one journey in one direction within a set time. A day ticket (Tageskarte) pays off from about three trips. Weekly (Wochenkarte) and monthly (Monatskarte) tickets are for regular travel. Group day tickets are cheap for families.
Buy it
From the machine at the stop or in the vehicle, in the app of the transport company or DB Navigator, at kiosks and ticket offices. Bus drivers sell tickets too, often for cash only.
Validate it
In many cities a paper ticket is only valid once it is stamped (entwertet) in the small machine on the platform or inside the bus or tram. An unstamped ticket counts as no ticket. Tickets from an app, and tickets printed with date and time, are already valid.
Consider the Deutschlandticket
For 63 euros a month (2026) it covers all local and regional transport in the whole country. It is a subscription, personal, and not valid on long-distance trains: the Deutschlandticket: how it works and where it is valid.
If an inspector checks you
Show your ticket and, for personal tickets, photo ID. Without a valid ticket you get a demand for an increased fare. Handbook Germany names 40 to 80 euros depending on the place. The usual amount is 60 euros. If you own a personal monthly ticket and only left it at home, show it at the customer office within the deadline and the charge drops to a small fee.
Good to know
Repeated travel without a ticket can be reported to the police as a criminal offence, which can also cause trouble with a residence permit.
Children under six travel free. Pupils, students, apprentices, older people and people on benefits get reduced tickets. Ask for the Sozialticket of your town.
Bicycles need their own ticket on many networks and are not allowed at rush hour on some.
For long-distance trains, booking early is much cheaper than buying on the day. The fast trains (ICE, IC) need a separate ticket.
In short: Ticket before boarding, zones decide the price, stamp paper tickets, day ticket from three trips, Deutschlandticket for 63 euros, 60 euros fine without a ticket.
