The Deutschlandticket: how it works and where it is valid

2 min read · 6 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

The Deutschlandticket costs 63 euros a month in 2026 and covers all local and regional public transport in Germany: buses, trams, underground, S-Bahn and regional trains (RB and RE). It is not valid on long-distance trains (ICE, IC, EC). It is a subscription that you can cancel monthly, by the 10th of the month.

One ticket for the whole country: with the Deutschlandticket you can ride the bus in your town and take regional trains from Hamburg to Munich, if you have the time. For anyone who commutes it is nearly always cheaper than a local monthly pass.

Rules, amounts and deadlines change. Check the official source named at the end before you act, and ask the office in your city, because procedures differ from town to town.

Step by step

  1. Decide where to buy

You can order it from Deutsche Bahn on bahn.de or in the DB Navigator app, or from your local transport company. The ticket is the same everywhere. Local companies sometimes add extras.

  2. Order it before the month begins

The ticket always runs for a calendar month, from the first to the last day. Order it a few days before you need it.

  3. Give your bank details

It is sold as a subscription and paid monthly by direct debit, so you need a German or other SEPA bank account. See how to open a bank account in Germany as a newcomer.

  4. Keep the ticket on your phone

You get it as a digital ticket in the app, or with some companies as a chip card. It is personal. Carry an official photo ID, because inspectors may ask for it.

  5. Use the right trains

It is valid in second class on RB, RE and S-Bahn trains and on buses, trams and underground lines of all transport associations. It is not valid on ICE, IC and EC trains or on other long-distance operators such as FlixTrain.

  6. Cancel in time

The subscription renews every month. To stop it, cancel by the 10th of a month and it ends at the end of that month. You can also use it for a single month this way.

Good to know

A bicycle is not included. Bikes need their own ticket under the rules of the region.

Many employers offer it as a discounted job ticket, and many universities include a cheaper version in the semester fee. Ask before you buy your own.

It reaches a few border stations abroad, for example Salzburg, Kufstein and Schaffhausen, on certain lines.

In the app, journey search has a filter for local transport only, so that you are only shown trains the ticket covers.

In short: 63 euros a month, all local and regional transport, not ICE or IC, subscription with monthly cancellation by the 10th.
