iPhone Wi-Fi not working? 9 fixes that solve most cases

Short answer

Switch Wi-Fi off and on in Settings, restart the iPhone and the router, then forget the network and join it again. If that fails, reset network settings under Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone.

Wi-Fi problems come from the phone, the router or the internet line. A quick test tells you which: if other devices on the same Wi-Fi work, the problem is the iPhone. If nothing works, it is the router or your provider.

Step by step

  1. Switch Wi-Fi off and on in Settings

Open Settings, Wi-Fi and use the switch there. The Wi-Fi button in Control Centre only disconnects until tomorrow and does not fully turn Wi-Fi off.

  2. Turn Airplane Mode on for ten seconds

This resets all the phone's radios at once. Turn it on, wait, and turn it off again.

  3. Restart the iPhone

Hold the side button and a volume button, slide to power off, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on.

  4. Restart the router

Unplug the router from power, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. Give it two or three minutes to come back online.

  5. Forget the network and join again

In Settings, Wi-Fi, tap the i next to the network and tap Forget This Network. Then select it again and type the password carefully.

  6. Turn off VPN and Private Relay for a test

A VPN app or iCloud Private Relay can block a connection. Switch the VPN off under Settings, VPN, and try again.

  7. Check for a login page

Hotel, airport and café Wi-Fi often needs you to accept terms first. Open Safari and try to load any website to make the login page appear.

  8. Update iOS

Open Settings, General, Software Update, using mobile data if needed.

  9. Reset network settings

Open Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, Reset Network Settings. This deletes all saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings, so make sure you know your home password first. Nothing else is erased.

Good to know

If the Wi-Fi switch is greyed out and cannot be turned on, that points to a hardware fault. Contact Apple.

If the connection works but is slow in some rooms, the issue is signal, not the phone. Moving the router higher and into the open helps more than any setting.

Connected but "No Internet Connection" under the network name means the router has lost its line. Call your internet provider.

In short: Wi-Fi off and on, restart phone and router, forget and rejoin, then reset network settings.
