How to set an alarm on an Android phone
2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 3 October 2026
Open the Clock app, tap Alarm and tap the Add button. Set the hour and minutes, tap OK, then tap the days of the week if the alarm should repeat. Tap the alarm to give it a name, choose its sound and switch vibration on or off. When it rings, tap Stop, or Snooze for another 10 minutes.
The alarm is one of the most used features of any phone and one of the easiest to get slightly wrong: set for the wrong days, silenced by Do Not Disturb, or too quiet to wake anyone. Here is how to set it up in Google's Clock app, and the settings that decide whether you actually hear it.
Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones and Google's own apps on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the screens, not screenshots.
Step by step
Open Clock and tap Alarm
Open the Clock app and tap Alarm at the bottom.
Add an alarm
Tap the Add button, the plus sign. To change an alarm you already have, tap its time instead.
Set the time
On the round clock face, slide the hand to the hour and then to the minutes. Or tap the keyboard icon and type the time. With the 12-hour format, tap AM or PM. Tap OK.
Choose the days
Tap the alarm to open it and tap the days of the week on which it should repeat. Without any days selected, it rings once.
Name it and choose the sound
Tap Alarm name to label it, for example School run. Tap the alarm sound to pick another tone, one of your own sound files, or a song from a music app. Tap Vibrate to switch vibration on or off.
Stop or snooze it
When the alarm rings, tap Stop, or tap Snooze to be reminded again in 10 minutes. The snooze length can be changed in the settings of the Clock app, under the three dots.
Switch off or delete an alarm
Tap the switch on an alarm to turn it off without losing it. For a repeating alarm, this turns off all the repeats. To remove it for good, open it and tap Delete.
Good to know
If your alarm did not go off, check four things. The alarm volume: press a volume key, tap the three dots and raise the slider with the alarm clock symbol. Do Not Disturb: alarms must be allowed in its settings. Notifications for the Clock app must be on. And Battery Saver can hold alarms back unless Clock is listed as an essential app.
Leave at least five minutes between two alarms. Google warns that the first one may be cancelled if they are set too close together.
A paused alarm skips chosen dates, such as a holiday, and comes back by itself afterwards: open the alarm and choose the dates.
