How to move passwords to Google Password Manager on Android

2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 3 October 2026

Short answer

Open the Google Password Manager app, tap Settings and Import passwords and passkeys, and confirm with your screen lock. Choose the password manager you are leaving, sign in to it and approve the transfer. Or export a .csv file from the old manager and import it through Chrome, Settings, Google Password Manager.

If your passwords are in another password manager or in a browser on your computer, you can bring them into Google Password Manager in one go instead of saving them again one at a time. There are two ways: directly from another app on the phone, or through an exported file.

Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones and Google's own apps on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them.

Step by step

  1. Set a screen lock first

The import only works on a phone with a PIN, pattern, password or fingerprint: how to set or change the screen lock on an Android phone.

  2. Import directly from another app

Open the Google Password Manager app, tap Settings and then Import passwords and passkeys. Confirm with your screen lock, choose the password manager you want to import from, sign in to that app and approve the export. Tap Done.

  3. Or export a file from the old manager

In your old password manager or browser, look for Export in its settings and save the passwords as a .csv file. Move the file to the phone, for example into the Downloads folder.

  4. Check the file

The first row must hold the column names url, username and password. Most managers produce that by themselves. Up to 3,000 passwords can be imported at a time.

  5. Import the file

Open Chrome, tap the three dots, Settings, Autofill and passwords, Google Password Manager. Tap Settings, then Import passwords and passkeys, confirm with your screen lock, choose to upload a .csv file, pick the file and tap Import.

  6. Delete the file

A .csv file holds every password as plain text. Delete it from the phone and from the computer, and empty the bin there, as soon as the import has worked.

  7. Check the result

Open a few entries in Google Password Manager and compare them. Then run Checkup to see whether old, leaked or doubled passwords came along.

Good to know

Passkeys can only be moved by the direct route between apps, where both apps support it. A .csv file carries passwords only.

Keep the old password manager for a week or two before you delete your account there, until you are sure nothing is missing.

To go the other way, tap Export passwords & passkeys in the same settings and download the file.

In short: Google Password Manager app, Settings, Import passwords and passkeys, pick the old manager. Or export a .csv, import it through Chrome, and delete the file straight away.
