How to add emergency information to an Android phone

Short answer

Open the Safety app, tap Your info, and fill in Medical information such as blood type, allergies and medicines. Then tap Emergency contacts, Add contact, and pick the people to call. First responders can read this from the lock screen by swiping up and tapping Emergency, then View emergency info.

If you cannot speak for yourself after an accident, a paramedic can still learn from your phone who you are, what you must not be given and whom to call. It takes five minutes to set up and needs no unlocking to be read.

Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones and Google's own apps on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them.

Step by step

  1. Open the Safety app

    On Pixel phones it is called Safety or Personal Safety. On other phones, look under Settings, Safety & emergency. Sign in to your Google Account if asked.

  2. Add medical information

    Tap Your info, then Medical information. Enter what matters in an emergency: blood type, allergies, medicines you take, conditions such as diabetes or epilepsy, and whether you are an organ donor.

  3. Add emergency contacts

    Tap Your info, Emergency contacts, Add contact and choose people from your contacts. Tell them that you have named them.

  4. Check how it looks from the lock screen

    Lock the phone, swipe up, tap Emergency and then View emergency info. This is what a helper sees. Anyone who picks up the phone can read it, so enter only what you are happy to share.

  5. Add a line to the lock screen

    Under Settings, Display, Lock screen, Add text on lock screen you can show a short message, for example a number to call if the phone is found.

  6. Check the Emergency Location Service

    Open Settings, Location, Location services, Emergency Location Service and leave it on. When you call or text an emergency number, the phone then sends its position to the emergency services in countries that support it.
