Android apps keep crashing? 7 fixes that work

2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Restart the phone, update the app in the Play Store, and clear the app's cache under Settings, Apps. If it still crashes, update Android System WebView and Chrome, free up storage, and reinstall the app.

An app that closes by itself is usually out of date or has damaged temporary files. When many apps crash at once, the cause is often a system component they all share.

Step by step

  1. Restart the phone

It clears memory and stuck background processes.

  2. Force stop the app

Open Settings, Apps, choose the app and tap Force stop. Then open it again.

  3. Update the app

Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, Manage apps and device, and install waiting updates.

  4. Clear the app's cache

In Settings, Apps, the app, Storage & cache, tap Clear cache. This keeps your account and data. Clear storage is the stronger option: it resets the app and signs you out.

  5. Update Android System WebView and Chrome

Many apps use WebView to show content. Search for "Android System WebView" and "Chrome" in the Play Store and update both. This fixes cases where lots of apps crash on the same day.

  6. Free up storage

Apps crash when the phone is nearly full: how to free up storage on Android.

  7. Uninstall and reinstall

Check first that your data in the app is saved to an account. Then remove the app and install it again from the Play Store.

Good to know

Install any Android update under Settings, System, Software updates.

If the app crashes for everyone, recent Play Store reviews will say so. Wait for the developer's fix.

Apps installed from outside the Play Store may not match your phone or Android version.

In short: Restart, update the app, clear its cache, update WebView and Chrome, reinstall.
