Short answer

Open Finder and click AirDrop in the sidebar. Drag a file onto the person or device shown in the window. To receive, set "Allow me to be discovered by" to Contacts Only or Everyone.

AirDrop sends photos, documents and links between Apple devices without cables, email or an internet connection. It uses Bluetooth to find devices and Wi-Fi to transfer.

Step by step

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Both are needed on the Mac and on the other device. Keep them within about nine metres of each other.

  2. Shift+Command+ROpen AirDrop in Finder

    Open Finder and click AirDrop

It is in the sidebar. You can also press Shift + Command + R in Finder.

  3. Choose who can find you

At the bottom of the AirDrop window, set "Allow me to be discovered by" to Contacts Only or Everyone.

  4. Drag the file onto the recipient

Nearby devices appear as circles. Drop the file on one. The other person accepts, unless the device is yours and uses the same Apple Account.

  5. Or use the share button

In most apps, click the share button, choose AirDrop and pick the device.

Good to know

Received files go to the Downloads folder.

If a device does not appear, wake it and unlock it, switch off Personal Hotspot on the iPhone, and set receiving to Everyone for a moment.

Contacts Only needs both people signed in to iCloud and saved in each other's contacts with their Apple Account email or number.

Leave it on Contacts Only in public places, so strangers cannot send you files.

In short: Finder, AirDrop, drag the file onto the device.
