Short answer

Open Settings, tap Google, then All services, then Find Hub, and switch on Use Find Hub. Also keep Location switched on. The phone can then be located, rung, locked or erased from google.com/android/find.

Find Hub, earlier called Find My Device, is what lets you locate a lost phone. It is usually on already, but it is worth checking before you need it, together with the settings that let the phone be found when it is offline.

Step by step

  1. Open Settings and tap Google

Then tap All services. On some phones the path is Settings, Security & privacy, Device finders.

  2. Tap Find Hub and switch on Use Find Hub

The page also shows which Google Account the phone is linked to.

  3. Check Find your offline devices

Tap it and choose how the phone joins the network of other Android devices that helps locate it when it has no connection. "With network in high-traffic areas only" is the default.

  4. Keep Location on

Open Settings, Location and make sure Use location is on. Without it the phone cannot report where it is.

  5. Test it

On a computer, go to google.com/android/find, sign in and check that the phone appears on the map.

Good to know

Add a recovery phone number and backup codes to your Google Account, so you can sign in when the lost phone is your only verification device.

Write down the phone's IMEI number, which you see by dialling *#06#. The police and your network ask for it after a theft.
