How to cast an Android screen to a TV

2 min read · 6 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Connect the phone and the TV or streaming device to the same Wi-Fi network. Open the Google Home app, press and hold the tile of the TV, tap Cast, then Cast my screen and Cast screen. Everything on the phone now appears on the TV. To end it, hold the tile again and tap Stop mirroring.

Casting the screen mirrors the whole phone on the television: photos, a website, an app that has no TV version. It works with a Chromecast, a Google TV streamer, and televisions with Google Cast built in. The phone needs Android 8 or later.

Names of buttons are from Google's own apps on a recent Android version. They can differ slightly on your phone.

Step by step

  1. Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi

The phone and the TV or streaming device must be in the same network. A guest network or a separate 5 GHz name on the same router can be enough to keep them apart.

  2. Open the Google Home app

Install it from the Play Store if needed and sign in with your Google Account. The TV or streaming device has to be set up in the app.

  3. Press and hold the tile of the device

You find it under Favorites or Devices.

  4. Tap Cast, then Cast my screen

Confirm with Cast screen. Android asks whether you want to share the whole screen or one app. With Cast one app, only that app is shown, and notifications and other apps stay private.

  5. Turn the phone sideways

Videos and photos fill the TV screen in landscape. Switch on auto-rotate in the quick settings if the picture stays upright.

  6. Stop casting

Press and hold the tile again and tap Stop mirroring. You can also stop from the casting notification on the phone.

Good to know

If the TV does not appear, Google says to allow the microphone permission for Google Play services: Settings, Apps, Google Play services, Permissions, Microphone.

For films and series, casting from inside the app is better than mirroring. Tap the Cast icon in YouTube, Netflix and similar apps: the TV then plays the stream itself, the picture is sharper and the phone is free for other things.

Mirroring uses a lot of battery. Plug the phone in for a long session.

Samsung phones call their own version Smart View, found in the quick settings. Apple users: how to mirror an iPhone screen to a TV.

In short: Same Wi-Fi, Google Home app, hold the device tile, Cast, Cast my screen, Cast screen. Stop with Stop mirroring.
