Open the Phone app, tap the three dots, tap Settings and tap Caller ID and spam. Switch on See caller ID & spam and Filter spam calls. Suspected spam calls then no longer ring.
Google's Phone app can warn you when a caller is a suspected spammer, and it can stop such calls from ringing at all. It is the standard phone app on Pixel phones and many others.
These steps are for the Phone app by Google. Samsung phones have a similar setting in their own Phone app, under Settings, Caller ID and spam protection.
Step by step
Open the Phone app and tap the three dots
They are at the top right. Tap Settings.
Tap Caller ID and spam
It is in the list of settings.
Switch on See caller ID & spam
The phone then shows a warning when a suspected spam number calls, and shows the names of businesses.
Switch on Filter spam calls
Suspected spam calls no longer ring. You get no missed-call or voicemail notification for them, but they stay in your call history.
Report a spam call that got through
In the Phone app, tap the call in the list and tap Block or Report spam. The number is blocked and reported.
Good to know
If a real call was marked as spam, tap it in Recents and tap Not spam. A blocked number can be released with Unblock.
Look through the call history from time to time. A filter can catch a genuine caller, such as a delivery driver.
