How to turn off notifications from an app on Android

Short answer

When a notification appears, touch and hold it and tap Turn off notifications. Or open Settings, tap Notifications, then App notifications, and switch off the apps you do not want to hear from.

Many apps send adverts and reminders nobody asked for. Android lets you silence a whole app, or only certain kinds of notification from it.

Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them, so the Samsung name is given where it differs. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the screen, not screenshots.

Step by step

  1. Touch and hold a notification

Do this the next time the app bothers you. On some phones, swipe it slightly sideways and tap the gear.

  2. Tap Turn off notifications

Then switch off the whole app, or only the category shown, and tap Apply or Done.

    Review all apps in Settings

Open Settings, Notifications, App notifications. Sort by Most recent or Most frequent to find the worst offenders.

  4. Switch off categories, not everything

Tap an app to see its notification categories. In a shopping app, for example, you can keep delivery updates and switch off offers.

Good to know

Set a notification to Silent to keep it in the list without sound or vibration.

Notification history, on the same page, shows alerts you dismissed too quickly.

Since Android 13, new apps must ask before sending notifications. Tap Don't allow when the request appears.

For quiet hours with exceptions, use Do Not Disturb: how to turn on Do Not Disturb on Android.

In short: Hold the notification, Turn off notifications. Or Settings, Notifications, App notifications.
