How to schedule a text message on Android

2 min read · 5 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

In Google Messages, type your message, then touch and hold the send button. Choose one of the suggested times or tap Select date and time, tap Save, and tap send. The message waits with a small clock next to it.

A scheduled message is written now and sent later by itself, which is handy for birthdays, reminders and messages to people in other time zones.

Step by step

  1. Open the conversation in Google Messages

    Type the message as usual.

  2. Touch and hold the send button

    A Schedule send menu appears.

  3. Choose a time

Pick a suggestion such as Later today or Tomorrow morning, or tap Select date and time and set your own. Tap Next, then Save.

  4. Tap send

The message appears in the conversation with a clock icon.

  5. Change or cancel it

Tap the clock next to the message and choose Update message, Send now or Delete message.

Good to know

The phone must be switched on and connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi at the scheduled time. Without a connection the message may not go out, so check afterwards if it mattered.

On Samsung phones with Samsung Messages: tap the plus or arrow next to the text field and choose Schedule message.

WhatsApp has no built-in scheduling for ordinary accounts.

In short: Google Messages, type, hold the send button, pick a time, send.
