I don’t think that you’d be surprised if I told you that Apple devices don’t get along with other non-Apple devices, right? Shocker! (Sarcasm). Every device has its drawbacks and that even includes Apple. Let’s take Apple and Windows for example. There’s a problem that iPhone user have to put up with.
I’m referring to trying to make your iPhone show up in the File Explorer in Windows. You’re trying to connect your iOS 10 iPhone to your Windows 10 computer, but everything only ends up in frustration. Before you throw something out the window, there are some methods you can try to fix the problem.
How to Get Your iPhone to Show Up in the File Explorer/This PC in Windows
First things first, connect your iPhone to your PC. Now you will need to open the Device Manager, and you can do this by either typing in Device Manager in the search option, or you can right-click on the Quick Access Menu and choose Device Manager.
Now that you have it open look for the Universal Serial Bus Controllers option. It’s going to have an arrow pointing right to the left of it, click on it, and a drop-down menu should appear. One of the options in the drop-down menu should be Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.
Double-click on it and its properties should open. When it does, go to the Driver tab and uninstall the driver. Don’t forget to disconnect your iPhone now and then reconnect it. What Windows 10 will do now is look for and download the driver and everything should be working just fine now. Still nothing? try the methods below.
Uninstall/Reinstall iTunes Method
You’d be surprised what a simple uninstall/reinstall can do. That’s exactly what you’re going to do with iTunes. After you’ve done that connect your iPhone to your Windows 10 computer.
Once again open Device Manager by right-clicking on the Quick Start Menu and choosing Device Manager. Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers again and when you open its Properties again, this time update the driver. If none of the two methods work, please check to see if you might have an app that could be causing this problem.
Try to remember if you installed any app/s around the time you started having these problems. If you can think of one, go ahead and uninstall it and see if the problems goes away. Don’t forget to check that you’ve checked the Trust the computer option that you’re going to use. There have been countless times when I was convinced I did something when I didn’t.
Install Windows Updates
Hopefully, by installing the following Windows updates you can see your iPhone on This PC/File Explorer, again. Be careful to choose the right version according to your own OS. So, you’ve installed the first and then the second update. After these updates, you should be able to see your iPhone again.
Make Sure You Have Full Control on iTunes Folder
To check if you have complete control over the iTunes folder go to Start button > This PC > Music. Look for the iTunes folder and right-click to gain access to its Properties.
Click on the General Tab and uncheck the Read Only (Only applies to files in folder) option. Before you leave, don’t forget to check Apply and then OK to save what you have done.
If nothing has changed, let’s check that you do indeed have full control over the iTunes folder. To check go to iTunes properties window again and this time go to the Security bar. Click Edit and make sure that the Allow box in Full Control is checked.
Computer problems are always going to be part of our lives, but all you can do is to try and solve them the best way you can. You now know of various methods you can try to get your iPhone to show up in the Windows This PC/File Explorer.
Hopefully, after trying these methods things will go back to normal. The solutions can possibly vary depending on what version of Windows you have, not everyone wants to upgrade to Windows 10.
